Cyclone Fani, which is strengthening into a severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, and a low pressure surrounding it are expected to cause fairly widespread rainfall in several parts of Malnad and South Interior Karnataka, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The IMD has also forecast squall along with thundershowers, gusty winds and lightning in isolated parts of South Interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka and Malnad region on Monday.

Wind speeds are expected to reach 40-50 kmph in southern parts. The effect of the cyclone will be felt in the region for the next two days. Overcast conditions are expected to prevail in many parts of Karnataka over the next two days.

S S M Gavaskar, Junior Scientific Officer at Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell, said rainfall would be mainly caused by the low-pressure region around the cyclone and not by Fani itself.

“The low pressure has extended till Belagavi to South Konkan region on Sunday. This trough and other local phenomena, such as cyclonic circulation in north Karnataka, is expected to cause rainfall,” he said.
