Deve Gowda questions CM's claim of being BC leader

Last Updated 12 January 2014, 18:38 IST

Former prime minister and JD(S) national president H D Deve Gowda on Sunday said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was a ‘lacklustre’ leader of the backward classes (BC).

He was speaking at a Banjara community convention here.

“Where is this self-styled leader of the Ahinda (a forum of backward classes)? What has he done for the backward communities? I was one of the first who tried to include the Banjara community under the Scheduled Tribes,” the 82-year-old leader said.

Gowda said that the JD(S) was not a party of the Vokkaligas or a heirloom of the Gowda family. “I have ensured that the party is not that of Deve Gowda and his son Kumaraswamy. It is a party of the people and that of all communities and sects,” he said.

He said that the JD(S) will host a meeting of the party’s members in all Gram Panchayats on January 17 to discuss the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The party will host a rally of women workers in Chitradurga on January 27 and a farmers’ rally in Raichur on January 29.

The JD(S) has nominated Sheela Naik, a member of the Banjara community and lawyer, as the State president of its women’s wing.
