Janata Dal (Secular) leader H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday criticised the Union government for not doing enough to end the plight of the farmers of Karnataka and other states.

Participating in a discussion over Union Budget 2017-18 in Lok Sabha, Gowda urged the government to take urgent steps to help the tobacco and coconut farmers of Karnataka.

He questioned the claim of the government on creation of jobs. The creation of new jobs is not commensurate with the increasing number of unemployed youths,” he.

Gowda said that farmers, who often find themselves in debt trap, are committing suicides. He drew the attention of the government to the drought in Karnataka.
