Last Updated 18 May 2017, 21:07 IST
JD (S) national president H D Deve Gowda celebrated his 85th birthday in a simple way on Thursday.

As during the previous years, he along with his family members visited Tirumala and offered prayers to Lord Venkateshwara. On his arrival at Sri Vari Temple, officials have welcomed the former prime minister with temple honors and led him to the sanctum sanctorium. .After offering prayers, the Vedic pandits rendered ‘Vedasirvachanam’ to the Gowda at Ranganayakula Mandapam.

After returning to Bengaluru, he interacted with the media and said that farmers across the country are in distress. Farmers are driven to commit suicide. The same has been brought to the notice of the prime minister, he added.

In the evening, a seminar on Regional Parties’ Role in Federal System was organised to mark the birthday of Gowda.

Addressing the gathering, Gowda said judiciary, legislature and executive have lost their dignity. “I had announced that I would resign as MP if the BJP comes to power on its strength. I did not do so because I knew how the BJP would function. I have expressed my displeasure at the manner in which the Centre is performing. I have conveyed the same to the prime minister,” he said.

The BJP is trying to create ‘Hindu Rashtra’ by promoting the concept of one country and one language. This would affect Indian federal system, he said.

Appaji canteens

JD (S) MLC and businessman T A Saravana has announced that he would be establishing “Namma Appaji Canteens” in Bengaluru city. These canteens are going to be opened in the name of H D Deve Gowda.

An announcement to this effect was made by Saravana on the occasion of Gowda’s birthday. The canteens may be opened even before the government opens the proposed Indira Canteens. The MLC, who is into gold business, met Gowda and greeted him.

“In a month’s time, the first canteen would come up in Basavanagudi. Breakfast would cost Rs 5 and lunch Rs 10. Vegetables for the canteen would be directly purchased from farmers,” Saravana said.
