The Government has responded positively to the department’s Rs 11.2-crore project to develop the school in all respects. It has given administrative approval and an amount of Rs one crore has been released in this regard, said Police department sources.

The department has prepared several schemes as part of the project. We have decided to utilise funds in a phased manner. The schemes include new school building, hostel, library, ground and other basic amenities. Tender process to begin the works will begin shortly, Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation DGP S C Saxena told Deccan Herald.

The state-of-the-art school with all modern facilities will come up in a sprawling 37-acre land purchased near Kalghatagi in Dharwad district. The students will be shifted to the new building after completion of the construction work, said Dharwad Superintendent of Police D Prakash. The Police department began the school in 1997 to fulfil the academic needs of the children of police personnel of all ranks, free of cost. Entrance examination to select the students will be conducted in April every year.

Bangalore City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari, who headed the Special Task Force (STF)to nab forest brigand Veerappan, donated Rs 50 lakh from his personal share of the cash award given to the STF by the Government. As per Bidari’s requests, the government named the school after the then Home Department chief secretary N A Muttanna.

The school is established on the District Armed Reserve Grounds with students from Class VI to X pursuing education. Education is imparted in both Kannada and English medium.
