The office of the Communist Party of India near the bypass road in Bantwal was vandalised and set on fire by miscreants on Thursday.

Sources in Bantwal town police station told DH that the miscreants gained access into the CPI’s one-storey building by breaking the back door.

After making a heap of the documents in the office, including membership of beedi workers and applications for beedi scholarship, the miscreants set fire to them. The furniture too was set on fire, police sources said. They said the CPI members were using the building near bypass road to store documents.

The Bantwal town police registered a case, based on the complaint by CPI secretary B Shekhar. It is suspected that the vandalism is in retaliation to CPI cadre setting fire to BJP offices in Kerala. The police have collected CCTV footage from the surrounding buildings and hope to arrest the vandals soon.
