Footfall in Mysuru Palace, Zoo soars over long weekend

Hotels in Heritage City look to remain full till May

An extended weekend (April 29 to May 1) brought cheers to the tourism sector with lakhs of people thronging the heritage city to enjoy their vacations. The footfall was high due to public holidays on Saturday (Basava jayanti), Sunday and Monday (May Day).

While Sri Jayachamarajendra Zoological Garden (Mysuru Zoo) received more than 32,000 visitors on Saturday, as many as 28,412 people visited the Zoo on Sunday. Around 3,000 people visited Karanji Lake over the three days.

An increased footfall was seen at the Mysuru Palace, Chamundeshwari Temple atop Chamundi Hill and other tourist hotspots in and around the city.

City traffic was snarled up with nearly two lakh vehicles from across the state and neighbouring states plying on the city roads. A majority of the tourists were said to be from Bengaluru, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.  
Hotels booked
Tourists who had not made prior bookings were seen struggling to find an accommodation as almost all the hotels were full. A city lodge manager told DH that many visitors were even ready to pay double the rent.

Mysuru Hotel Owners’ Association president Narayangowda said that hotels have seen 100% occupancy and the hoteliers are hoping it will continue till the end of May as summer vacations will be on.
