In an incident straight out of films, a homemaker was allegedly forcibly taken away by her relatives after attacking her husband in broad daylight, here, on Friday.

The couple from Mangaluru belong to different religions and were living in hiding here after marriage.

Shivaraj, 22, had married his childhood friend Haleema Shahin, nine months ago, despite opposition from the latter’s parents. Shivaraj, who had discontinued his engineering studies, married Shahin before shifting to Mysuru. They had rented a house in Krishnamurthypuram here since then.

Sources told Deccan Herald, the duo was eking out a living with the support of Shivaraj’s parents.

On Friday afternoon, they were returning home on a two-wheeler after shopping at a supermarket on JLB Road, near their house, when their vehicle was hit from the rear by a car. No sooner the duo fell off the vehicle, the occupants of the car attacked Shivaraj with a weapon and hit on his left leg to make him immobile. Taking advantage of the situation, they forcibly took away his wife in the car.

What may have infuriated the girl’s parents and relatives is her statement to the police in Mangaluru earlier.

Following their marriage, the girl’s relatives had lodged a kidnap complaint against Shivaraj. The police had taken the duo to custody in Mysuru and had taken them to Mangaluru. The girl, in her statement to the police said that she had married Shivaraj on her own will.

The couple were freed and returned to Mysuru, but continued to live under fear.
Following the recent incident, the injured Shivaraj was treated as an out-patient at K R Hospital.
