Factions at work, members sent on tour

Former legislator K Srinivasagowda, Union Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa and legislator Varthur Prakash are said to have been engaged in political manouvering to ensure victory of their candidates. Shashidhar and N G Byatappa are the contestants for the post of president in the 23-member body.

While the former is said to have been backed by Srinivasa Gowda, the latter is supported by K H Muniyappa.

The post of the president is reserved general category while that of the vice-president is reserved for BCM ‘A’ category.

Menaka Sonnegowda, a member had obtained stay for the election, which should have been held in the month of May itself. The last term of the Taluk Panchayat, now lasts for 18 months.

Offers

It is said that members have been lured with various offers to ensure victory in the election. As many as 12 members who have identified themselves with Srinivasa Gowda have been sent on Goa tour, few days ago. Zilla Panchayat former president Venkatamuniyappa has sent three JD(S) members on Delhi tour. Eight members who have identified themselves with Union Minister K H Muniyappa have also been sent on tour by legislator Varthur Prakash.

Lakshmamma and Papaiah were the president and vice-president for the first term, while Yuvaraj and Srinivas ruled for the second term.

The nominations will be accepted at 11 am on Saturday and they can be withdrawn up to 2 pm. The election will be held in case more than one contestant remain in the fray, after scrutiny of nominations, officers said.
