Mysore ZP to get new president, V-P today

Last Updated 17 September 2013, 19:42 IST

Will it be the continuation of BJP and JD(S) combine at Zilla Panchayat or Congress will avenge the loss at Mysore City Corporation? Answers for all these posers will be known on Wednesday, the day scheduled for elections to the posts of president and vice-president reserved for general and BCM (A) respectively.

Congress that has 22 members (including lone independent) against the total 46 is confident of making for the loss of city corporation, where JD(S) ditched its long time ally Congress  to win mayoral elections with the support of BJP.

The election is scheduled at 11 am and the process will begin with the filing of nominations.
Koorgalli Mahadev and Madappa from Congress are aspiring for president’s chair, while for vice-president it is Revamma Malegowda and Bhramarambha Mallikarjuna. Among JD(S) too there are no dearth of contenders, but the name of Lalitha G T Devegowda is doing rounds.

Though Lalitha won on BJP ticket, she later followed her husband and Chamundeshwari MLA G T Devegowda into the party (JD(S)).

What matters for Congress is the support of just two members to cross 24 votes. While JD(S) has 16 members, BJP has eight, which when put together makes for the magic number. Unlike previous elections, the situation has changed with five who had split from BJP to express solidarity with KJP keeping all on tenterhooks. There are speculations of the possibility of two among the five members who have identified with KJP, Sindhuavlli M Kempanna and Manjula Puttaswamy, supporting Congress.

Not willing to give up, all the parties have issued whip and BJP has been extra cautious by pasting  the notice (whip) on the door of the house of Kempanna and Manjula Puttaswamy for not receiving  it on hand. Congress members who have been camping at a resort on the outskirts, are expected to arrive in the city an hour ahead of the election.
