JOIN USProf (Retd), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi, Dr S S Murthy on Friday favoured Mysuru as an ideal destination to set up the institute in the State.
Speaking after inaugurating an international seminar on Microgrid organised at the National Institute of Engineering (NIE) in the city, Murthy said ‘It is better to set up the dedicated facility for technological education in Mysuru, for the region being an education hub, with a conducive atmosphere.
Even though there is a demand to set up the institute either at Raichur or Hubballi- Dharwad, it would be against the rules. According to the existing norm, there should be a distance between the IITs. Raichur is close to Hyderabad and Hubballi is near to Goa, where IITs are already functioning.
Educate farmers
On the microgrid, Murthy welcomed the efforts being made to encourage self-sustenance in generating power at rural areas.
However, apart from creating the facilities farmers should be educated on using the related technology.
Saying that most of the villages in the State still lack adequate power supply, Murthy said there is a demand for average two units of electricity per day from every houses in the country.
At rural places, the demand is still less, but there is no improvement in power supply.
The only solution is generating power at the local level utilising the available resources.
Technology
Microgrid is one such technology that helps in generating unconventional energy using the existing resources.
Dr Giri Venkataramanan from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, USA, advocated for a movement on power front on the lines of recently concluded Badanavalu satyagraha at Nanjangud taluk in Mysuru district, for sustainable livelihood.
