Race hots up for TP posts in Chikkaballapur district

 Political activities have gained momentum in the district with the state government declaring reservation for the posts of taluk panchayat president and vice-president.

Aspirants are not leaving any stone unturned to secure the support of their political mentors. Some are meeting the local elected representatives and some are busy lobbying with other leaders at various levels. Reservation matrix might have made or marred the aspirations of a few members.

Of the six taluks in Chikkaballapur district, Congress is in majority in five. While JD(S) holds the key in Shidlaghatta, the road to power is smooth for Congress in Chikkaballapur, Chintamani, Gowribidanur, Bagepalli and Gudibande taluks. JD(S) is sure to capture power in the Shidlaghatta taluk panchayat.

Chikkaballapur taluk
In the 15-member Chikkaballapur taluk panchayat, Congress has nine seats and JD(S) six. The post of the president is reserved for General Merit category. Ramaswamy (Doddamarali constituency) and Venugopal (Hosahudya) are the front runners for the post. Both are making their own efforts to garner the post. It is said that they have met legislator Dr K Sudhakhar and others.

The post of vice president is reserved for Backward Classes (B) category. The contenders for this post are yet to emerge and final decision rests with the legislator.

Chintamani
Former MLA Dr M C Sudhakhar holds the key in Chintamani taluk and people picked by him are likely to be the president/vice-president of the taluk panchayat. In the 23-member taluk panchayat, Congress has 18 seats and JD(S) has the remaining seats. The post of president is reserved for General Merit (women). Kavitha Manjunath (Oolavadi constituency), Shilpa (Yanamalapadi constituency),
Shanthamma Varadaraju (Upparapet) are the contenders for the post. The post of the vice-president is reserved for Scheduled Caste. Krishnappa (Chinnasandra), Nadumapalli Srinivas (Kencharlahalli) and Nanappa (Konapalli) are said to be the contenders.

Gauribidanur
Legislator N H Shivashankara Reddy wields influence in selection of the candidates for the taluk panchayat posts. With 24 seats in the 26-member taluk panchayat, Congress has absolute majority. The post of the president is reserved for General Merit category. Lokesh (Hosuru) and Ramababu (Namagondlu constituency) are said to be the contenders. The vice-president’s post is reserved for Backward Classes (A) category.

Bagepalli
Of the 16 seats in the Bagepalli taluk panchayat, Congress has the highest (10) followed by CPM(3), JDS(2) and Independent-1. The president’s post is reserved for Scheduled Caste. Gortapalli Narendrababu and Nallappareddypalli Padmavathamma are said to be in the race. Saraswathamma (Devaragudipalli) is said to be the contender for the post of vice-president. The selection is said to be dependent on the chose of MLA S N Subbareddy.

Gudibande
Congress has the majority in the 11-member Gudibande taluk panchayat. The party has five seats, followed by CPM-3 and Independents-3. The post of the president is reserved for Backward Class (A) category. Varalakshmi (Varlakonda), Manjula (Doddanencharlu) and H S Prema (Somenahalli) are said to be the contenders. The post of vice president is reserved for General Category (women). The members are said to be not happy with this reservation and it is yet to be seen whether they would file an objection or go ahead with the reservation.

Shidlaghatta
Shidlaghatta taluk panchayat is the only TP in Chikkaballapur district where Congress has no majority. Of the 17 seats in the TP, the JD(S) has 9 and Congress 8. The president’s post is reserved for General Merit. Narayanswamy (Bashettihalli) and Rajshekhar (Cheemangala) are in the race. The name of K Lakshminarayana of Handiganala is also doing the rounds. Local MLA M Rajanna is said to be take a decision in the matter.
