Unseasonal rains lashed various parts of Shivamogga district and Siddapura in Uttara Kannada district on Sunday evening.

Soraba, Sagara, Shivamogga and Hosanagara regions in Shivamogga district received moderate rainfall.

For the last several days, showers remained elusive to the residents of Soraba taluk, even as dank weather prevailed most of the time. Though various parts of the taluk witnessed thunder and lightning, the skies opened up nearly after a week’s time.

Showers brought respite to the people who have been reeling under the scorching sun for the last several days. The residents of Soraba taluk rejoiced as they welcomed the first showers of the year.

Rainfall has proved beneficial for jowar, paddy, groundnut, arecanut and banana plantations cultivated as summer crops by the farmers in the district.

Siddapura town and the surrounding areas in Uttara Kannada district received heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning for nearly an hour on Sunday evening. While the intensity was less in the town, the surrounding villages received torrential rains.

Fire in the mountain

Fire broke out in Joladarashi Hills on the outskirts of Hosapete in Ballari district on Friday night. Forest officials rushed to the spot and doused the flames which had engulfed the hills.

A Forest department official said that the exact reason for the fire cannot be ascertained. For the last few days, temperatures soared to 41 degrees Celsius in the district.

Most of the trees and plants had dried up in the sweltering heat. Breeze on the hills could have triggered the fire, he added.
