An undertrial, who was escorted to Kerala for a hearing, escaped from custody. The incident is reported to have occurred on Thursday, following which, two constables attached to City Armed Reserve (CAR), who had accompanied the undertrial has been suspended.

The undertrial’s name is Prakash, who is a native of Bagandur in H D Kote taluk of Mysore district. He was imprisoned at Mysore Central Prisons, after he was arrested for his alleged involvement in two incidents of theft. One of the incidents of theft had occurred near Bekal Fort, Kerala.

Prakash was produced before JMFC court, in Kalpet, Kerala from the Prisons on Thursday morning. He was escorted by head constable Prakash and constable Manjunath. After producing him before the court, the trio had stepped out for lunch, when the undertrial, despite being handcuffed succeeded in hoodwinking the two and escaped.

The attempts by the two to nab him did not succeed, following which they lodged a complaint at the local police station, said police sources.

M N Joglekar, DCP (CAR) said that the two constables have been suspended pending departmental enquiry following the escape, for negligence, on Friday.

Meanwhile, sources at Mysore Central Prisons said that they had sought for a ‘strong’ escort, as the undertrial was to be produced at a location, with considerable distance from the jail. “Jail authorities cannot specify the number of personnel for escort, but had sought a strong escort possibly with weapons, to produce the undertrial to the court,” the source said. Considering our requisition, police decide on the escort depending on their manual, the source added.

City Police Commissioner, M A Saleem said that a CCB team has been deployed to capture the undertrial. Kerala police too have formed a team to capture him, he said.

On whether there wasn’t adequate escort for the undertrial, he said that escort was provided depending on the nature of an offender. “Since, he was booked for a theft case, appropriate escort was provided,” he added.
