Women take the lead in bagging degrees in Mysore university

UoM convocation on July 5; 11,758 women to receive degrees against 9,280 men

Continuing with their feat, women have outnumbered men in receiving different degrees and even medals and prizes at the 93rd convocation of the University of Mysore, scheduled for July 5.

Briefing media on Tuesday, K S Rangappa, Vice-Chancellor of the varsity, said, of the total 21,038 candidates eligible to be conferred with degrees, women constitute 56 per cent with 11,758 candidates and men 44.10 per cent with 9,280 candidates.

Of the successful 3,278 PG candidates, 1,833 are women (55.9 per cent) and 16,947 are graduates with 9,793 women (57.8 per cent). Of the total 296 medals and 159 prizes shared by 184 candidates from five faculties, 104 (56.5 per cent) are women.

The only relief for male candidates is PhD degrees — of the total 363 candidates eligible to receive PhD in 50 subjects, men top with 231 candidates (63.6 per cent) against 132 women (36.4 per cent).

Subjects wise, a highest of 1,299 candidates (including men and women) from Science and technology stream will be receiving Master’s degrees, followed by Arts-1,261, Commerce-981, Education-157 and Law-30. A highest of 6,154 students from Commerce stream will receive bachelor’s degree, followed by Arts-4,093, Education-3,442, Science and Technology-2,975. In the list of successful PhD candidates, Science again leads at 180, followed by Arts-135, Commerce-28, Education-13 and Law-seven.

The V-C said, for the convenience of visiting dignitaries, first five toppers in every stream, medals and prizes in each of the five faculties comprising UG and PG, will be honoured during the ceremony.

In MA Arts, Manju P (Folklore) has secured 90 pc from Kuvempu Institute for Kannada Studies (KIKS), Manasagangotri and Akshatha M (Kannada), JSS College for Women, Chamarajanagar has won eight medals and two cash prizes. In UG section, Swathi M P (BA), Maharani’s Arts College for Women, Mysore, is the topper securing 86.10 pc, Shruthiranjini M T (BPA) from University College of Fine Arts, Mysore, and Sujan Kumar D (BA), NDRK College, Hassan, have won five medals and four cash prizes each. In PG Commerce stream, Narasimha Akash M (MCom), department of studies (DOS) in Commerce, Manasagangothri is the topper with 85.79 pc, while Melyawaty (MBA), Bahadur Institute for Management Studies (BIMS), Manasagangotri has won two each of medals and prizes, and Meghshree B also of MBA (Agri-business), Institute of Development Studies, Manasagangothri, has won four medals.

In UG section, Roopashree A M (BCom) of AVK College for Women, Hassan, has topped at 89.84 pc and Radhika P (BCom) of Marimallappa’s First Grade College, Mysore, has won one medal and four prizes. In the faculty of education, Lingaraju S, DOS in Education, has topped in both stream (M Ed) and medal winning, with 89.80 pc and four medals respectively. It’s the same in UG too, where a lone candidate Pankaja N M (BEd) from JSS College of Education, Sakleshpur, Hassan, has topped at 99.25 pc, besides winning two medals and one cash prize. Rekha B M (BPEd), University College of Physical Education, has secured two medals and one cash prize. In the faculty of Law, Diana John (LLM), DOS in Law, Manasagangothri, is the lone candidate who has topped with 81.84 pc, besides winning three each medals and cash prizes. In the faculty of Science and Technology, Gangadhara D (MSc in technology) CS and T, DOS in Computer Science, Mansagangothri has topped with 97.94 pc, while Vanitha H R has secured 12 medals and four prizes. In the UG section, Priya M Kowshik (BCA) of Gopalaswamy College, Mysore, has topped with 91.4 pc, while Akhilesh K S (BSc) of Sarada Vilas College, Mysore, has won four medals and three cash prizes.

Honoris causa

Honorary doctorates will be conferred on noted scientist Prof Roddam Narasimha, former cricketer and president of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Anil Kumble, freedom fighter and social worker Ho Srinivasaiah and legal luminary T K Viswanathan, the vice-chancellor said.

Again, to make it convenient for the participating dignitaries, the convocation ceremony on July 5 is split into two sessions.

The main session will be at 10 am, when first five toppers will be feted along with conferring of honorary doctorates. M M Pallam Raju, Union Minister for Human Resource Development, will deliver the convocation address. Hansraj Bharadwaj, Governor and Chancellor of Universities presides. R V Deshpande, State Higher Education Minister, will grace the ceremony.

* Vignan Bhavan to be dedicated: Vignan Bhavan, comprising the Institute of Excellence, University of Excellence and Promotion of University Research and Scientific Education (PURSE), on Mysore-Hunsur road will be dedicated by M M Pallam Raju, Union Minister for Human Resources Development on July 5. Foundation will be laid for the proposed Maulya Bhavan (for evaluation purposes) at another piece of land near Saraswatipuram, opposite Kukkarahalli lake. It will house UGC nodal office and centre for State Level Entrance Test (SLET) exams. At the same stretch, it has been decided to allow Cesc to set up a separate grid to supply power round the clock to Crawford Hall, the administrative office of the University of Mysore.

*Back to white again: White is the dress code for successful degree holders, receiving the honour at the convocation. During the previous convocation, the varsity had made khadi mandatory. This year, owing to dwindling stock of khadi, the varsity has reverted back to white. The V-C said, “students can wear any type of white dress for the convocation”.

*Father, daughter duo to get PhD: The forthcoming convocation of the university has some specialities. Meshram from New Delhi is the eldest among successful PhD candidates this year. A former chairman of Institute for Town Planning, New Delhi, Meshram had submitted a thesis on ‘Urban town planning’. Meshram’s daughter Swathi, currently in USA, who also researched on the same topic is also among the successful PhD holders this year. Another speciality is M C Mohan Kumari, wife of Gundlupet MLA and Cooperation Minister H S Mahadeva Prasad, who researched in psychology, getting her PhD, the V-C added.

* PG entrance exams:V-C K S Rangappa said, the last date to apply for PG entrance exams has been postponed to July 6.
