Expressing anguish over the arrest warrants issued by a Kolkata court against Karnataka farmers defaulting repayment of Axis Bank loans, farmers staged a protest in front of Axis Bank branch at Bailhongal.

Nearly 100 farmers led by Rajya Raita Sangha and Hasiru Sene president Kodihalli Chandrashekhar, criticised the bank and forced the bank to down its shutters.

Initiating legal action through courts was against farmers; at a time when the Karnataka government had waived off crop loans. "This is injutice against farmers", he said.

Chandrashekhar alleged that the bank had failed to stick to the RBI guidelines and was 'anti-democratic'. He demanded that Axis Bank withdraw the cases.

"If not, we will launch a 'Axis Bank Hataoo' agitation," he cautioned. He demanded that the state government must safeguard the interest of the farmers. The protest lasted nearly three hours and affected bank transactions. Meanwhile, the bank manager informed protesters that he had received instructions from the bank HQ to withdraw the cases. But West Bengal courts were closed for Deepavali, he pointed out and told farmers not to worry.
