Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa who had come to the district on Saturday had said that there was no shortage of seeds or fertilisers and the required quantity had been imported in the State.

Criminal action

He had also assured that criminal action will be taken against those who hoard the seeds and fertilisers and sell them in black market. However, just two days after he made these statements, violence has erupted here.

In the incident three shops belonging to P S Kempannavara, Kempannavara and Bellada have been destroyed. The glasses, chairs, tables have been shattered.

The villages have looted the seed packets and strewn it on the road. Even as the tahsildar, the local traders and a few farmer leaders were holding a meeting soon after the incident, thousands of enraged farmers staged a rasta roko for nearly two hours on the national highway.

At this juncture when the police was trying to take a youth into custody, the farmers more incensed demanded the release of the youth. They threatened to intensify the agitation if he was not released immediately. The police who relented to the demands of the farmers, released the youth.

The traffic was disrupted due to the agitation on the national highway. Once the police realised that the farmers were not going to withdraw the agitation, the traffic police diverted the traffic through the bypass.

When the tahsildar inspected the agro agencies’ shops, it was found that the receipts contained the basic cost of the seeds. But the bills were not reflecting the higher price taken, charged the farmers.
