Kalaburagi police have arrested an entire family --comprising three sons, their father and mother --in connection with a case where a minor girl committed suicide.

Police said that the victim was unable to bear harassment from one of the sons of the accused family.

Superintendent of Police N Shashikumar, told reporters on Tuesday, those arrested were Bhimashankar Hakki (23), his elder brother Rakesh Hakki (24), younger brother Kalyan (20), their father Dashrath Hakki (52) and mother Shivalingamma Hakki (48). They are residents of Pala village in Kalaburagi taluk.

Bhimashankar was allegedly pestering the girl, also a resident of the same village for the past two years to marry him. The girl had spurned his advances.

On June 29, he barged into the girl’s house and threatened the family of dire consequences if they didn’t marry their daughter to him. SP Shasikumar added that Bhimashankar’s family had actively supported him in his misdeeds. Upset by this, the minor girl hanged herself to death on June 30.

The relatives of the girl staged a protest with the body in front of the DC's office on the same day, he added.

All the five accused have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Cases have been filed against them for abetting suicide and under POSCO sections.

A team headed by CPI M B Nagar and comprising police personnel from Gulbarga University police station guided by Additional SP Jayaprakash and DySP rural S S Hullur, made the arrests.
