The designs, with a blend of the modern and the traditional, has made a group of modest young women from Gadag make a mark in the competitive textile industry.

The girls and women from Nagavi Tanda near Gadag, trained by Maheshwari Vividoddesha Mahila Mandali, have been learning to preserve their distinct identity while adapting to the latest trends in lifestyles. The dresses with deep red and light pink hues and embellished with mirror, cowry shells and beats have become popular among the diverse group of people, said Jayashree B Hiremath, president of the Mandali.

She told Deccan Herald that 25 women were trained for 12 days in mirror and thread work, rimzim, Rajasthan mirror and thread work and other skills. The training was only to polish their skills and knowledge that have been a part of their heritage and interweave them with the changed tastes and trends.

It took no time to recognise their dexterity in the competitive apparel industry that the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce has given them an order immediately for embroidery work on the pallus (borders) of their products, said Jayashree, who has plans to display their works at international exhibitions abroad.

The cellphone pouches which have the Lambani trademark of mirror works are a major attraction for foreign tourists, especially in Goa, Bangalore and other cities. As the multipurpose pouch can be used as key bunch and come in different colours and designs, they have become easily popular in the market.

The government, which was keen on rehabilitating the community infamous for manufacturing toddy, has facilitated training for these women.

The women thank Inspector (Excise and Lottery Prohibition wing) D D Malagi who helped them get the benefit of the government scheme. The enterprise, however, has a far-reaching effect with a heritage of the community preserved in the fast-changing world of fashion.
