Govt sounds alert in coastal, Malnad regions

The government on Friday sounded an alert for coastal Karnataka and Malnad areas in view of forecast of heavy rainfall.

Holiday has been declared for all schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada district in view of heavy rainfall forecast, principal secretary (disaster management) Gangaram Baderiya said.

“All the deputy commissioners of coastal Karnataka and Malnad areas have been altered to keep vigil and take precautionary measures,” Baderiya said. “All deputy commissioners across the state have Rs 230 crore in their accounts earmarked for rescue, rehabilitation and relief measures due to calamity,” he added.

Baderiya said the Meteorological Department had forecast thunderstorm accompanied with strong winds in some districts.

The government’s disaster management cell has also decided to despatch three Fire and Emergency Service teams comprising 75 personnel to Mysuru region for areas including HD Kote, T Narsipur, Kollegal, Madikeri, Srirangapatna and Yedekuria where flash floods have been reported.
