Grant Rs 500 crore for Mahamastakabhisheka: Deve Gowda tells PM

Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda on Thursday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sanction Rs 500 crore to develop infrastructure at Shravanabelagola and surrounding areas for the Mahamastakabhisheka to be held early next year.

Gowda, who met the prime minister here on Wednesday, told reporters, “Though I met the Prime Minister earlier to seek funds, the Finance Ministry rejected the plea. I again requested the PM to reconsider the government’s decision,” he said. Gowda also said he would also meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and explain the reasons for seeking funds.

The Centre must sanction money since several development works including roads, drinking water, guest houses and other facilities are needed to be provided for a large number of pilgrims who visit the town to witness the anointment of Gomateshwara’s statue on Vindhyagiri, Gowda said. Though the state government has agreed to sanction some funds, the Centre must also provide its share since several development works have to be taken up, Gowda said.
