High Court seeks govt's view on Ballari zoo

The High Court, on Thursday, asked the State government to provide clarification on whether shifting of an existing zoo amounts to setting up of a new zoo.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice DH Waghela and Justice RB Budihal, asked the government to clarify after consulting with central government, while hearing a PIL questioning the government’s decision to shift Atal Behari Vajpayee Zoo from Ballari to Kamalapura area, next to Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary.

The State government, through a government order, had decided to shift the existing zoo as it was located amid a bus-stand which was causing disturbance to the zoo animals due to noise pollution.

The government had decided to shift the zoo 65 km away from the existing location and had submitted that Rs 10 crore has already been spent on setting up the new location.
Santosh Martin and Rajesh M Kurpad, Ballari-based petitioners contended that shifting of zoo next to Sloth Bear Sanctuary would disturb the animals in the sanctuary.
