Hoax calls send railway police into tizzy

Hoax calls on Friday sent railway police into a tizzy at Davanagere, Bagalkot and Shivamogga railway stations.

The police with bomb disposal squad and sniffer dogs conducted through checks at railway stations. However, the calls that had sent panic among the policemen turned out to be hoax.

The call was received at control room, Bengaluru at 2.50 am. The caller claimed that a bomb had been planted at railway stations and switched off the mobile phone.

The railway control room staff alerted their counterparts at all police control rooms across the state.

At Bagalkot, the police checked every corner of the station. All trains passing through the town were also checked.

Tension prevailed for a while at Davanagere railway station after the call. The police searched for explosives at Harihara and Mayakonda stations. The checks began at 4 am and lasted till 6 am.

"We were instructed to check for bombs after the call. Checks were conducted at three stations. Security has been beefed up at railway stations," R Chetan, SP, Davanagere district, told DH.

A metal detector has been installed at the entrance after the incident.

Similar checks were conducted between 2 pm and 3 pm on Friday at Shivamogga and between 3.30 to 7.30 am at Mysuru.

The police conducted checks at Belagavi, Londa, Ghataprabha, Castlerock and Khanapur and neighbouring stations.

The police said that they conducted the checks as precautionary measures in the wake of the threat call.
