Addressing the media in Bangalore on Tuesday, Academy’s chairman Go Ru Channabasappa said that about 42 modern singers and 20 traditional folk singers from across the State will participate.

He said that this was one of its kind “experiment” where the modern folk singers will come face to face with traditional singers, who use only three instruments while performing – ‘tamboora’, ‘tala’, ‘damadi’.

Traditional folk singers like Kamsaali Kumaraswamy, Doroji Eeramma, Malavalli Mahadevaswamy, Radhabai Madara, Bannur Kempamma, Kebbepura Siddaraju, Ganganarasamma, Marali Eeramma, Venkappa Ambaji and Parvathavva Hongala, will participate in the programme.

Interaction

Chennabasappa also said that folk scholars Dr Baanandur Kempaiah, Dr Venugal Narayana Swamy, Dr Veeresh Bellary, K Yuvaraj, Appagere Thimmaraju, Janni (Janardhan) and Dr P K Rajashekar – would preside over and moderate the interaction between the two groups.

The traditional singers will perform songs, which the modern singers will have to imitate and perform. There will also be discussions on the songs performed, while the panel of experts will try and highlight the positive and negative aspect of the modern folk singers, Channabasappa added.
