JD(S) to contest Mandya seat: Siddaramaiah

Coalition co-ordination committee chairman Siddaramaiah said on Tuesday that the JD(S) would contest from the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency.

Speaking to reporters at the Hubballi airport, Siddaramaiah said it was left to Sumalatha, wife of actor late Ambareesh, to decide on contesting as an Independent, as Congress could not claim the Mandya seat currently represented by the JD(S).

The seat has become a bone of contention for the coalition partners - JD(S) and Congress - as ticket aspirants of both the parties are adamant on contesting from the same seat. The JD(S) is expected to field Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy. While Sumalatha, whose late husband Ambareesh had won the seat earlier on a Congress ticket, is banking on sympathy votes to get elected. The seating-sharing talks are not over yet, he said and added that the process is expected to be completed in the next three-four days.

Siddaramaiah said, as per an internal survey, the coalition partners are expected to win more than 20 seats. Siddaramaiah said Speaker may not accept Chincholi MLA Umesh Jadhav’s resignation as his case comes under the anti-defection law.

BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal told reporters in Vijayapura that Sumalatha would be given the BJP ticket to contest from the Mandya seat if she joined the party.
