Karnataka CM B S Yediyurappa launches Vijayapura airport work virtually from Shivamogga

He stated that the proposed airport in Vijayapura would contribute to the overall development of the district

Speaking after launching airport project work in Vijayapura in a virtual programme on Monday, Karnataka CM B S Yediyurappa said the construction of an airport in Vijayapura will play a key role in generating employment for youth. Besides, it would contribute to the development of the tourism sector and the establishment of an international market for horticultural crops grown in the district. This way, the presence of an airport will contribute to the overall development of the district.

He said considering the tourism potential and economic activities in the district, the government has decided to construct an airport on 727 acres in Madabhavi and Bharanapura villages under the public-private partnership system at a cost of Rs 220 crore. Horticultural crops such as grape, lemon and pomegranate fruits are grown on a large scale in the district. Dry grapes and lemon are being exported overseas. The presence of an airport will strengthen the international market for horticultural crops of the district.

He said efforts are being made to include development and operation of Vijayapura airport under Udan scheme of Airports Authority of India. The work is being taken up for the operation of ATR 72, regional aircraft. It has been designed to a specification that would enable even an Airbus A320 to fly.

He said airport construction at Kalaburgi and Bidar has been launched. Shivamogga airport work has also been expedited. The officials concerned have been directed to complete Vijayapura airport project work within the stipulated time.

Karnataka State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited Principal Secretary Kapil Mohan, MP B Y Raghavendra, MLA Aaraga Jnanendra, MLC Rudre Gouda, Deputy Commissioner K B Shivakumar and others were present on the occasion.
