2 more days holiday for schools, colleges in Kodagu district

Bhagamandala, Virajpet, Gonikoppa receive heavy rains

As rains continue to lash Kodagu district, holiday's have been extended to Anganwadis, schools and colleges on Friday and Saturday, as a precautionary measure.

Bhagamandala, Srimangala, Ponnampet, Siddhapura, Ammathi, Virajpet, Gonikoppa and Hudhikeri and South Kodagu received heavy rainfall on Thursday.

Madikeri, Napoklu, Sampaje, Balelay, Somwarpet, Shanivarasanthe, Santhalli, Kodlipete, Kushalnagar, Suntikoppa received moderate rainfall. Madikeri, wore a gloomy look the entire day due to presence of thick clouds.

The water of Laskhmana Teertha river flowing near Srimangala, increased drastically and as a result, it started flowing near the road. The residents of the area are facing the threat of flood.

Rain damages

Rain damages have been reported in Somwarpet, Virajpet, Siddhapura and other parts of the district. Water has flooded in more than 10 houses in the district and there has been a damages worth Rs 1.8 lakhs.

A tree fell over the house of A Nachappa in Hudikeri hobli's Beerunaniyalli. A house belonging to another Nachappa of Tavalakere's Thadiyamgadi was also damaged due to tree fall.Houses belonging to Khasim, Maiheer, Pushpa from Kutta village, Kadardigodu's Sijju and Chenneyan Kote's Manjuala and Surendra's houses were damaged due to rain.

In Virajpet taluk, nine houses were damaged due to rain. However, no one has died or succumbed to injuries due to rain.

In Somwarpet taluk, house belonging to Meenakumari of 7th Hosakotte Village was damaged due to rain. The road between Somwarpet-Santhalli has been damaged due to a land slide. A ginger farm has been damaged.

Coffee seeds have started withering. The fertilizer also proved ineffective as the rain washed it down. Around one and half acre of paddy field which was planted 15 days submerged in rain water and farmers have already suffered a loss of about Rs 3.5 lakh. “When rain gives a break or water flows down, we have to plant the paddy saplings once again,” said a farmer.  

In Somwarpet, the Honnamma lake is overflowing inundating Basaveshwara and Honnamma Devi temple.

As the water is flowing on roads beside the lake, the road transport has been affected. The Irpu waterfall of Virajpet taluk has become the centre of attraction as the water is cascading in full glory. Honnammana Kere of Somwarpet is overflowing from the last two-days.

Harangi reservoir

The maxium water level at Harangi reservoir is 2859 feet. The water level noted in the reservoir on Thursday is 2854.88 feet and last year it was 2840.01 feet.

In Harangi and areas around Harangi 17.2 mm rainfall has been recorded. The water inflow to the reservoir is 13321 cusecs and 9200 cusecs water was left out on Thursday to the river and around 700 cusecs was released to the canal.

In Chikmagalur

The district has recorded moderate rainfall on Thursday. Kalsa has received 94.12 mm rainfall, Kottigehara 124.2 mm, Kammaradi 123.2, Kerekatte 175.2 mm, Hariharapura 103 mm rainfall.

N R Pura has received 50.8 mm rain and Joladhala has received 47.6 mm rainfall. However, Yemmadhudi received only 16 mm rainfall.
