'3 months to set right loopholes in tax system'

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a meeting with the representatives of TMC, CMC and Town Panchayats here at Chikmagalur, he said: “We have noticed that the local bodies have not been collecting the tax effectively. The CMC has collected only 30 to 40 per cent tax.

About 27,133 property have been included in the tax limits. While 7,440 properties have not been included in tax limits in Chikmagalur. The authorities can take legal action against those who have failed to pay the tax,” they added.

“We have toured various parts of the State. Most of the local bodies have failed to prepare an integrated development report. Most of the towns do not have basic infrastructures,” they added.

“After the Task Force was constituted, we have met local bodies officer, elected representatives. An interim report on the grants for the local bodies, shortage of staff and administrative issues have been submitted to the government,” they informed.

The local bodies have been asked not to depend on funds from the government, instead it should mobilise resources. All the property in City Municipal Council limits should be included under tax limit.

The drinking water is not being supplied properly.

The Task Force has already suggested the government to install metre for pipe in every household. The government in turn has already directed the local bodies. With the installation of water metre in Kundapur, the Town Municipal Council  has received Rs 20 lakh income,” Kodgi informed.

“Most of the local bodies are not showing any interest in development works by mobilising resources,” he said.

They said the Task Force has already suggested the officials to implement effective waste disposal system, development of drains and roads.

They have already suggested the government to reduce the funds to those local bodies who have failed to render their service effectively and to increase the funds to those who have undertaken development works.

Task Force Secretary G Ramachandra, Deputy Commissioner Channappa Gowda were present.
