The Tunganagar police seized 3,267 detonators and 36 boxes of gelatin sticks near the Shivamogga airport project site at Sogane on the outskirts of the city on Monday evening.

According to police, following the directions from Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, the district administration permitted stone quarrying near the airport site, to ensure that the airport work is not disrupted in any manner.

They had been brought from Chikkaballapur in two vehicles. The team of experts from Mangaluru was expected to arrive in Shivamogga to blast the boulders near the airport site. But they did not come. So, the drivers left the vehicles loaded with explosives and went away.

Later, members of the bomb detection and disposal squad from Bengaluru visited the spot.

Police have registered a case against the supplier of explosives, for negligence in handling them.

Six persons were killed in a blast of explosives at Hunasodu village in Shivamogga taluk in January this year.

Reacting to the incident, deputy commissioner K B Shivakumar told DH that the explosives had been brought legally.
