With the deadline for sending SMSes to get their ration cards regularised nearing, around 60,000 ration cards that were not identified with Electronic Photo Identity Card and Aadhaar numbers have been kept under suspension, in Chamarajanagar district.

In an effort to weed out illegal ration cards in the State, the department of Food and Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs had launched the SMS system, which had also drawn flak.

Beneficiaries had to register their Voters Identity Card and Aadhaar numbers as suggested by the department. But, the Anthyodaya, BPL and APL cards which were not registered till now, have been kept under suspension.

The last date for sending SMSes has been extended up to August 15. If the card holders get their numbers registered within the date, the cards will be regularised. But the BPL card holders whose cards are under suspension will not be distributed kerosene this month.

If they fail to get their numbers added, the supply of essential commodities too will be stopped from next month. The renewal of ration cards has not been taken up in the State after 2010. Moreover, irregularities too have been identified. Keeping these two factors in mind, the department has taken steps to weed out duplicate ration cards in full swing.

The suspended cards have errors in printing, data, and disparities in the address in the card and the current address, and others, say officials of Food and Civil Supplies department.
The beneficiaries can get their numbers registered at the gram panchayat offices taluk office. and Atal Janasnehi center.
