The organisers of All India 80th Kannada Sahitya Sammelana have decided to make the convention free from use of plastics. The convention will be held for three days from January 7 to 9.

The committee has decided not to use plastic carry bags, plastic plates and plastic glasses. It has been decided to give priority to cleanliness and make the convention eco-friendly. The organisers will use cotton bags, arecanut sheath plates and paper glasses. Tender has been given to a firm in Vittla to supply two lakh plates made of arecanut sheaths. The food committee is making all arrangement to procure paper glasses.

Food committee chief convener Keshav Kamath said that when compared to plastic plates and glasses, the rates of plates made of arecanut sheath and paper glasses are high.

“The decision to avoid plastics might have its impact on our budget. However, we have taken a decision keeping in mind our concern for nature. The public should join hands with us,” Kamath said.

Plastic-free town

The Madikeri CMC has declared the town free from plastic three years ago. It had restricted the use of plastics. The CMC had decided to fine those who were found using or selling plastic carry bags. Accordingly, the use of plastic carry bags has come down drastically. The shopkeepers use paper or cotton bags for packing the items.

Welcome Committee members have appealed to the participants of the meet and public not to carry plastic carry bags to the convention.

The CMC officials have been deployed to fine those found using plastic carry bags, said CMC Commissioner N M Shashikumar.
