All set for agri census in Kodagu district

On the direction of the Central government, the State department of statistics will carry out the census throughout the State. Accordingly, training will be held for the VAs. The census is being carried out once in five years. The first census was carried out in 1970-71. As many as eight agriculture census was held so far. This is the ninth census in the State.

According to available sources, Madikeri taluk has 1,45,045 hectares. In Madikeri taluk, about 52,513 hectare are under cultivation. Somwarpet has 99,999 hectares. Of which, 48,605 hectares are under cultivation. Virajpet taluk has 1,6,932 hectares and 77,361 hectares are under cultivation. The forest area, government land, Devara kadu, Paisari, gomala, Uruduve and other land is also included in the geography area of the district.

The training will be held at Madikeri on June 16, Somwarpet—June 17 and Virajpet—June 18. District Statistician and Agriculture department Joint Director will be the resource persons. 
In order to collect information relating to characteristics such as number, area, tenancy, land utilisation, crop pattern, irrigation particulars, utilisation of farm equipment, use of fertilisers, use of cattle, the details on the farm loan borrowed by the farmers will be collected.

The census helps to frame a policy for the development of agriculture. The census will also collect details on shortage of rain in the last five years, depleting ground water level, unused fields and so on.
