Banks should fulfil their social responsibility by providing loans towards the marriage of people from financially less privileged families, said Congress leader B L Shankar.

He was speaking during the mass marriage function organised by Al-Wafa Charitable Trust and District Beary Okkoota, at Seeta Dayananda Pai Kalyana Mantapa in Chikkamagaluru on Sunday.

Marriage is the most essential part of life. While some people consider the marriage functions as their status symbol, people from financially less privileged families find it hard to manage the expenses of marriage. Banks should come forward to provide loans to such people, he said.

He added that religious institutions and other organisations should conduct simple mass marriages.

Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy president K Muhammed said that during the mass marriage programme organised by Al-Wafa Charitable Trust and District Beary Okkoota, 50 grams gold and wedding attire was provided to brides. By following an ideal life, all couples married during the mass marriage should set an example to others, he said.

Eight couples from the Muslim community entered into wedlock on the occasion. Moulana Moulvi Aurangazeb Sahib led the rituals.

Leaders Dr D L Vijayakumar, H P Manjegowda, M L Murthy, A V Gatatri Shantegowda, D K Taradevi, K T Radhakrishna, Beary Okkoota District president C K Ibrahim and Maulana Hussain Sa-adi Hosmar were present among others.
