Jamia Milia Islamia speedster Abhay Negi picked five wickets as Bombay University faced trouble on the day one of the first semi final of All India Inter Zonal Inter University Cricket Tournament for Rohinton Baria Trophy at Manipal University Endpoint ground on Wednesday.

As the umpires call time for the day’s play, Bombay University was not in a comfortable position, as they scored 173 for the loss of nine wickets in 52 overs.
The match started at 12.50 pm as the outfield was not dried due to the rain.

The over per side was reduced to 70 from 90 overs and opting to bat first, Bombay lost wickets at regular intervals. No batsmen, except right hander Sashank Singh could resist the attack of the Delhi bowlers.

He scored 69 runs with three sixes and seven fours and faced 102 deliveries.  Pankaj Jaiswal and Shashank took the score from 26 to 119, when the former was caught and bowled by Abhay for 29.

Abhay Negi, who has played for Delhi in the Under-22, gave Jamia a great start removing four Bombay batsmen while conceding just 13 runs in the first spell of seven overs. He had splendid figures of two for two from six overs in the match against University of Madras yesterday.

Extracting pace and bounce off the wicket, Abhay destroyed Bombay’s top order sending four batsmen back cheaply and with Ashish Chopra taking a wicket, Bombay were five down for only 26 on the board.

Abhay finished with five for 52. Incidentally, four of his wickets were caught behind. Ashish assisted Abhay in reducing the Bombay innings to what it was at the end of the day with three for 46.

At MIT Ground, Jiwaji University escaped with a narrow victory of 15 runs over VBS Purvanchal University, Jaunpur. Batting first, they scored 198 in 49 overs before getting all out.

Despite scoring a decent total, they had to sweat it out because the East Zone winners fought a grim battle. Bharat Anant scored 51 runs and was well supported by Ravi Sikarwar, who scored 47 runs. In reply, VBS Puravanchal were all out for 183 in 47.4 overs.

Jiwaji captain Sohrab Dhaliwal gave break through at right point for the Gwalior team as he picked three wickets for 41 runs. On Thursday, they will take South Zone Runners Up Jain University in the second semi final.
