Last Updated 07 May 2014, 18:02 IST

The Kodagu district administration has filed a complaint against H C N Wadiyar who had locked Madikeri Palace (DC office building) which is in the fort premises, claiming that the palace belongs to him.

Last week, Wadiyar had written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner requesting to shift the office to some other place and handover the building to him.

He had also locked the main entrance and the office and the entrance near the Food department and put a name board which read- “H C N Wadiyar, Maharaja of Coorg, Owner of Markara Palace’.

However, Wadiyar has failed to produce any document to prove that the building belongs to him and locking the office is against the law.

He tried to encroach the government land. The police department should act against the person, demanded DC office Judicial Head Muncie Praveen, in the complaint.

Deputy Commissioner Anurag Tiwari said: “The walls of the fort and two artworks of elephants which are at the premises belonged to archaeological department. Wadiyar has nothing about the ownership about the building. In RTC, the land is mentioned as paisari land (government land). According to records, the British had brought the palace from its actual owners. After independence, various offices were established in the building. Since then, the building is under the control of the government,” he said.

If Wadiyar is true owner of the building, then he can submit true documents or can apply in the court, the Deputy Commissioner said.
