Kodagu synonymous with hockey

Kodagu is synonymous with hockey next to Punjab. Like Generals, many renowned National and International hockey players are the proud possessions of this tiny district.

Hockey being the main sport, Kodava hockey festival is held every year after year, which was started 14 years ago and has entered ‘record book’ as well.

The hockey festival is being hosted by each Kodava family every year. This year Maneyapanda family is the host. When the whole Karnataka is suffering from Gram Panchayat polls fever, Kodagu is least bothered and are busy in cheering their teams at the Maneyapanda 20-10 hockey utsav. The Kodava hockey festival is a platform to bring together all the Kodava families under one roof. There are more than 700 Kodava families in Kodagu.

Nearly 250 families have formed teams and are taking part in the hockey utsav. This is a platform to bring together all the families. Earlier, ‘Kodava mund’ was being held, wherein families were coming together to exhibit their talents and share their views. However, later such programmes began to reduce, which has been taken over by the hockey festival. There was festive mood all over during the hockey utsav.
