MLA visits rain-affected areas in Kodagu

MLA Appachu Ranjan, on Monday, directed City Municipal Commissioner Shashikumar to issue a notice to the contractor who built a retaining wall for the stream on Race Course road in Madikeri.

The MLA said the retaining wall was built unscientifically, hence it was facing the threat of collapse.

He inspected rain-affected areas in Mangaladevi Nagara, Jaya Nagara, Kannandabane, Azad Nagara and Race Course road in the CMC limits on Monday.

Speaking to the media, he said that three persons had lost their lives due to flood, in the district.

There has been damages due to landslide, house and retaining wall collapse following heavy rain at nine places in Madikeri. The loss incurred is Rs 3.72 crore, which includes damage of 49 houses, death of three cattle, damage to electric poles and roads.

He said that he would request the government to release a special flood relief package of Rs 50 crore.

Assistant Commissioner G Prabhu said the district was ready to face flood like situation in the days to come.

Shifting

CMC Commissioner Shashikumar said 14 families have been asked to shift to safer places in  Mangaladevi Nagara. The CMC staff have been asked to visit all the wards, estimate the loss incurred due to the damage and submit a report. Approximately Rs 22 lakh damage has been incurred due to collapse of retaining wall and damage of electricity polls and pipelines in Thyagaraja Colony road, Chamundeshwari Nagara, Azad Nagara, Mangaladevi Nagara, behind Gaddige and at Putani Nagara.

Rain recedes

The heavy rain that lashed Kodagu district for the last one week, receded on Monday. The intensity of the rain reduced in most of the places except in Madikeri, Bhagamandala, Napoklu and Sampaje. Agriculture activities have resumed in the district.

The activities pertaining to paddy, jowar, tobacco cultivation has intensified in Kushalnagar, Somwarpet, Kodlapet and Shanivarsanthe.

 Work on removing weeds in coffee plantations has begun in Virajpet, Ammathi, Siddhapur and Srimangala areas. Those who have been shifted to gruel centres have started returning to their houses.

Though a house was damaged in Ammathi hobli, no death has been reported. Kodagu has recorded 14.87 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. The water level in Harangi reservoir stood at 2,855.28 ft on Monday as against the maximum water level of 2,859 feet.
