'No seperate sand mining policy for Kodagu'

Lorry owners, drivers withdraw protest
Last Updated 12 November 2011, 18:24 IST

Addressing the lorry owners and drivers who were on protest since last nine days at Sampigekatti near Madikeri on Saturday, he said that the State government has come forward to implement uniform sand policy across the state.  Hence asking for separate policy for Kodagu is not possible.

“Few rules in the sand mining policy are not suitable for the geography of the district. I will ask the Deputy Commissioner to simplify few rules in the policy,” he said and added that he will direct the officials from Mines and Geology department not to disrupt the transportation of sand in light vehicles for day to day affairs.

“The shortage of sand in the State was due to ban on sand mining in Kerala. With the ban the demand shot up drastically. As a result, majority of the sand extracted in the State was transported. If the transportation is checked, then the sand will be available in plenty for the people of Karnataka,” he said and opined that the officials should initiate action against those who were involved in illegal mining. There is no point taking action against lorry drivers and owners.

Kodagu district Chamber of Commerce President Chidwilas said “we can not stop implementation of the policy. Once the policy is implemented, let us discuss on the pros and cons of the new policy.”

Protest over
Lorry, mini lorry owners and drivers association president Suresh said that the protest staged by the Association for the last nine days will be withdrawn as the Assembly Speaker has responded to the woes of the lorry owners.
