“The officials should sensitise the public how the country would be on the path of progress and in turn the public would benefit out of the prompt payment of income tax. The public should also be educated that the evasion of tax is a criminal offence,” he said.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Income tax office here on Saturday. The department started its operations in 1860 and mobilised a tax of ` 3 crores in the first year. Today, the department accrues a net worth of ` 4.5 lakh crore as tax money. The tax amount collected is spent on the development works in the Country, he said. The officials of the IT department should convince the people for the tax payments on time. Any default of the payment of tax on income coming under the tax slab would attract fine and criminal action under the law, he added.
MLA H S Prakash urged the citizens not to treat IT men as their enemies. They won’t use it for their own purpose. The Income tax collected is utilised for the progress of the country. He also urged the IT officials to make IT returns simple for the rural people. K Girish, L R Janakinath and others of IT department were present.
