The prohibitory order under Section 144 imposed in Kodagu district following untoward incidents during Tipu Jayanti celebration has been extended till 6 am of November 25.

The ban order will be in force from 6 pm to 6 am, In-charge Deputy Commissioner M Kurma Rao, said.

Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, he said barring government programmes, all other public meetings and processions have been banned during the period. The ban order prohibits assembly of more than five persons. People should not move holding weapons, he stated.

He said that the law and order situation is under control in the district. Following the report of Superintendent of Police that Section 144 has been relaxed and it will be in force from 6 pm to 6 am. There are chances of various organisations holding public programmes, dharna, gherao and processions in the district and a few persons might use the platform for provocative speeches. Hence, the authorities decided to extend the prohibitory order, he reasoned.

The in-charge deputy commissioner said marriage and reception programmes can be organised. However, one needs to take permission from local bodies for these events.

Superintendent of Police  Varthika Katiyar said that 64 persons have been arrested following unrest in the district and 35 cases have been filed.

The SP said that she represented Karnataka in the All India Police Badminton Championship from November 3 to 6 in New Delhi, which is part of the department programme.
“I had not taken leave for playing badminton,” she clarified.
