Girish from Mandya, is undertaking a solo bicycle expedition to create awareness on nature and the ill-effects of plastic.

A native of Maddur taluk in Mandya, Girish has completed ITI and is working in Toyota company in Bengaluru.

To check the use of plastic and to conserve nature, he has been creating awareness by travelling to at least one taluk on his bicycle, over the weekend. He has already travelled 2,000-km.

He has visited Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Ramanagara, Tumkur and Shivamogga districts and created awareness on the ill-effects of plastic by distributing handbills in schools and public places.

He also promotes the planting of saplings among schoolchildren.

He said, “20,000 cattle die annually after consuming food covered in plastic. Plastic does not degrade in soil. About 1 crore tonne food is wasted annually in various functions. Instead of wasting food, it is better to distribute it among the poor.”

During the weekend, he takes his bicycle and visits different parts of the state.

On Sunday evening, he either keeps his bicycle at his relatives or friends house and returns to Bengaluru either by bus or train.

He said that former president Dr A P J Abdul Kalam and Swami Vivekananda are his inspiration.

After visiting all the 30 districts in the state, he wishes to create awareness outside the state as well.
