Sportspersons boycott Dasara sports in CB'Pur

The Dasara sports meet which was scheduled to begin here on Monday was cancelled after sportspersons boycotted the event complaining poor arrangements.

The sportspersons, led by District Athletics Association secretary Manchanabele Srinivas, expressed their against the assistant director of Youth Empowerment and Sports department. They said that the track marks had not been made in the stadium where Dasara sports meet was to be held. Field had not been prepared for various sports and sand had not been filled properly for high jump and long jump pits. They said that the stadium faces lot of problems and the assistant director had turned deaf ears despite they airing the grievances for the past four years.

Srinivas, who showed the vegetables brought for preparing food for the sportspersons, said that the vegetables were not fit even for feeding cows. “ Who will be responsible if the sportspersons fall sick by consuming food made of these vegetables,” he wanted to know.

Some sportspersons alleged that the food provided for students at the sports hostel was substandard. The cook prepares the food inebriated and serves children while chewing gutka, they claimed. They also said that the students were not being provided food as per the timetable.

Manchanabele Srinivas took the cook to task and questioned him about the quantity of milk purchased for the hostel every day. The cook replied that the contractor had asked him to purchase eight-nine litres per day.

Srinivas said that a students should be provided with 200 gm of milk every time. There are 38 students in the hostel and going by this number, 15 litres of milk is required even if milk is served once a day.

Some sportspersons blamed the assistant director, Jayalakshmi, for the lapses. They said that the officer had no knowledge about the sports and the needs of sportspersons.

However, Jayalakshmi said that it was decided to put track mark in the morning. She said she had no knowledge about the poor quality of vegetables purchased.  “The responsibility was entrusted to physical education subject inspectors in respective taluks. The inspector delegated the task to a private person, leading to the mess. Udaya Agency is in charge of providing food at the sports hostels. There were complaints against the conduct of the cook and I have asked the agency to change him,” she said.

She added that of the four posts sanctioned for the department, the posts of superintendent, second division assistant and attender were vacant. The officer said that she was finding it difficult to discharge all the responsibilities alone due to lack of staff.
