It is rare for students of schools and colleges in rural areas to have well-stocked libraries and well-equipped laboratories.

One such laboratory is found on the premises of Kapilamma Composite College in Nadipinayakanahalli of Shidlaghatta taluk.

Students conduct a variety of experiments in the laboratory which has been set up at a cost of Rs 18 lakh. Interestingly, this laboratory is not for the students of the composite college alone. Even students of high schools and colleges, in the sourrounding villages, make use of this laboratory.

Students can conduct a variety of experiments such as soap making, testing the quality of water and adulteration of food. The exhibits in the laboratory include the depletion of the ozone layer, protein-rich foods, natural calamities and their control among other informative subjects. Blood test, AIDS awareness, plants as seen under a microscope, physics models, atomic energy are all displayed here.

“We have several models of biology and equipment to conduct various experiments in physics. We also conduct various experiments in chemistry. Scientist Roddam Narasimha had visited our college. We have exhibited several science models and experiments during annual celebrations”, say Sushma and Suhana, students of the College.

“When we started the college in the rural area we faced many difficulties. We had to take out students to other colleged for conducting experiments. Now we have our owm well-equipped laboratory, which also helps the students of other schools and colleges in the surroundings”, Principal N K Satyanarayana says.
