Udupi to get sports science centre

The state government has given its approval for setting up a sports science centre at a cost of Rs two crore in Udupi, said district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj.

Speaking after inaugurating the National Sports Day here on Tuesday, the minister said that the government was setting up two sports science centre in the state - one in Bengaluru and another in Udupi. These centres will conduct research on medicines, nutritious food, treatment and rehabilitation measures for sportspersons, which would help them to boost their abilities.

The minister said that the government had earmarked Rs 285 crore for promoting sporting activities in the state and Rs one crore has been allotted to four sports hostels.

Gymnasium

A state-of-the-art gym has been set up in Bengaluru and Udupi with international standards. The department of Youth Empowerment and Sports operates 14 swimming pools in the state which were maintained by private agencies. The department has now taken over maintenance, which has brought in a revenue of Rs 67 lakh to the department in two months.

“If sportspersons find any lapse in the hostels, they can bring the matter to the notice of the officials whose contact numbers have been displayed at every hostel,” he said.

The minister noted that the government has decided to promote sports in a big way. Towards this end, the government has already announced Rs 10 lakh to five sports institutions in state. He also urged the sports institutions and academies to register for the incentives.

Tennis court

The work on Rs 4-cr lawn tennis court would be completed in about two months. A proposal is sent to the Union government for setting up a swimming pool of international standard in Nejar at a cost of Rs eight crore.

As much as 6.5 acres of land has been identified in Brahmavar for the construction of cricket stadium. He said that athletic and swimming academies would be started in the district at the cost of Rs two crore and one crore respectively, he added.
