Karnatak University, Dharwad, has filed a complaint with the Lokayukta
police against the dean of its Education department over charges of seeking bribes
to award PhDs to two students.

The complaint was filed following a decision in this regard at an emergency meeting of the university Syndicate on Tuesday.

Ejaz Ahmed Naiku from Jammu and Kashmir and Shabia A M Khan from Hubballi had enrolled themselves for PhD theses under the guidance of Prof Noorjehan Ganihar. The professor is said to have sought a bribe of Rs four lakh each from the two students.

The students had recorded on their mobile phone conversations with Ganihar and had submitted a complaint to the registrar on March 18. The Karnatak University, Dharwad, in its complaint, stated that not only did the professor delay her reply to the show-cause notice, but also that it was not improper.
