The varsity covering Bellary and Koppal districts came into existence last July. Since then it has been functioning from the building housing the extended campus of the Gulbarga varsity at Alipore in the City. Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) has set in motion the process to acquire 140 acre land located behind the Gulbarga varsity building.

However, given the snail’s pace of the process, there are no signs that the work on the building for the new university would start even in the new academic year. First vice-chancellor of the varsity Manjappa Hosamane and registrar Yashwant Dongre have been doing the rounds of the district administration for the past six months to get clear the hurdles.

“Revenue department can directly acquire farm lands, but the compensation do not exceed Rs 92,000 per acre. Farmers do not consent for this. Hence the land is being acquired through KIADB at Rs 10 lakh per acre. I have come to office of the district administration as personal approach would move the things faster,” the V-C said during his recent visit to the deputy commissioner’s office.
