Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday remembered Ananth Kumar as an able organiser and a diligent worker who excelled in tasks assigned to him both – in the government and the BJP.

Mahajan said as Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ananth Kumar was thorough with the rules and procedures and was a great help to her in running the Lok Sabha.

Mahajan had met Ananth Kumar on October 28 when he returned to Bengaluru after undergoing treatment in the US and London.

“I sensed that something was not right. I was mentally prepared. One part of my mind always felt that he would be alright soon. I used to pray to God for his well-being and was in contact with his wife,” Mahajan said recalling that she had worked closely with Ananth Kumar, who was also in-charge of Madhya Pradesh as General Secretary of the BJP.

At a condolence meeting organised in Parliament House, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel paid glowing tributes to Ananth Kumar saying he lived his life to the fullest. “He shared his joy with everyone but kept the pain for himself. We never knew about his illness,” Goel said.

Goel recalled how BJP veteran L K Advani had mentored young leaders such as Ananth Kumar, Pramod Mahajan, Sushil Modi and himself in the early 1990s. Goel said Ananth Kumar played a key role in helping the BJP create a base for itself in Karnataka.

“A state where we could barely win two MLAs, the ‘lotus’ bloomed there in 2008,” Goel said.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley remembered Ananth Kumar as an able organiser for the BJP who helped the party create a base in southern India.

“He will always be remembered for his works as parliamentarian and a political leader,” Jaitley said.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal recalled that during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, he had seen Ananth Kumar take some medicines and that he had lost weight.
