First meeting of Cauvery Management Authority on July 2

The Cauvery Water Management Authority will hold its first meeting on July 2 here and discuss several issue including water storage in Cauvery basin reservoirs and monthly release from uppper riparian states to lower riparian states.

The meeting, which will be chaired by Central Water Commission chairman Masood Hussain, will also deliberate the issues related to following the guidelines mentioned in the notification constituting the Authority.

Karnataka has nominated its principal secretary to Water Resources Department Rakesh Singh as its member of the Authority. “Since it is the first meeting, there may not be any major decisions However, the Authority will certainly discuss the issue of monthly release of water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu,” said an official from the Water Resources Ministry.

Karnataka had lodged protest against some of the powers of the Authority, saying it will hurt the state’s interest.
