The district-level exhibition-cum-sale of handloom products—Kaveri Vastrasiri—organised by the Department of Handlooms and Textiles and Zilla Panchayat, was inaugurated by ZP president B A Harish and vice president Lokeshwari Gopal.

The exhibition is being held at Gandhi Maidan in Madikeri.

Speaking on the occasion, the ZP president said that there is a need to strengthen cottage industries.

“Desi products should be promoted. The cottage industries help in the generation of employment,” he added.

There is a decline in demand for handloom products in the recent past. The weavers should be supported, he said.

Zilla Panchayat vice president Lokeshwari Gopal called upon the people to make use of the mela.

Handlooms and textiles department assistant director G S Guruswamy said that weavers societies from across the state have exhibited their products. Silk sarees, cotton sarees, Kanchipuram sarees, Molakamooru, Ilakal sarees, bedsheets and towels are exhibited.
