The video of 35 youth from Mangaluru who had been to Kuwait on employment through an agency seeking help has gone viral on social media.

As the video went viral, Mangalore City South MLA Vedavyas Kamath swung into action and spoke to the concerned authorities to help the stranded youth. “Let us all make sure that these youth return back safely to Kudla,” he said in a message.

In the video, the youth said that they had left for Kuwait in the month of January and have been deprived of salary for the past five months. “We are struggling for food. There are over 200 such workers from different parts of the country struggling for livelihood without salary or proper food,” they have said.

Payment to agencies

A youth named Ganesh said, “By paying Rs 65,000 each to Manikya Associates Placement Private Limited owner Prasad Shetty, we had landed in Kuwait on January 7. The life here is in jeopardy. We are not paid salary for the past five months. Since the food supply at the work site has been stopped, we are literally begging for food.”

Another youth has said, “We were brought here on promise of employment at the Cambridge company in Kuwait. After reaching here, we were offered job in another company. We just want to return to our native place.”

Another youth has said they had approached the Embassy, seeking help, however, there was no response from them.

Appeal for help

The youth are seen appealing for help to ensure that the video reaches the legislator.

As the video of the city youth went viral on Whattsapp, MLA Vedavyas Kamath contacted Raj Bhandari Tirumaleguttu over telephone and requested him to visit the affected youth.

Tirumaleguttu, in turn, visited them and also got the youth to speak to the legislator over phone. Copies of the passports of the youth have been collected. The MLA has sought help from the Ministry of External Affairs and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel in getting the youth back to India.
